So, it would still be possible just to throw one up by hand to launch?

It could pop up from a little canister; while throwing it, it would have to recover from tumbling, imo.

Greetings everyone.
I'm playing Taki Aka Ortega.

His name is a source of conflict.
Taki is traditionally a name given to girls. Taki was named before he was born, and because he was the 7th boy in his family, they decided to keep the name. It means "waterfall".
Aka is a reference to Mars. Aka means red—as in red planet.
Ortega is his family name on his mother's side. His father was of Japanese descent and married in to "power/wealth".
Taki prefers his Latin roots and so he identifies more with "Ortega" or "Rojo" which is spanish for red.

Ooc: Was just thinking the same! Reckon there would be some signs unique to the scouts, not sure what? Bindoner suggested, unfairly I think, that we smell bad...
Based on the Canon Type S having faulty air-scrubbers, my old group decided that Scouts, living in that smell for years, would become quite tolerant of odours, and perhaps less scrupulous about deoderants than other spacers :D

At my grandfather's memorial service, one of his old fire department pals got up and told a few stories. One of them my brothers and I reference frequently:

Bob (my grandpa) drank sparingly, and only ever had one glass of whiskey. When the bartender would ask him "how much?" Bob would say, "just two fingers."

The joke is that instead of holding up two fingers (index and middle) to indicate how high to fill the glass (from the bottom of the glass to about 1.5" deep, 2 oz.) he'd use his index and pinky finger... indicating a LOT of whiskey in one glass—basically to the top of a tumbler/highball... 8-10 ounces.
It's a subtle joke, and one that anyone could see from across the room.

I propose that Scout's have various cultural behaviors, like this one, that other Scouts would immediately recognize.

Seconded.

Reminds me of: "The pessimist says the glass is half empty, the optimist half full, the engineer that the glass is twice the optimal size for the volume of liquid, and I say keep pouring."

Regarding Ross-28

Rojo is 38.
Calson is 34.
Elton is 30.

It's possible that the three of them met serving various capacities along the unregistered route to Ross 28 between 8 and 10 years ago.
The overlap would have occurred between Elton's first and second term with the Scouts.
And, it would have been between Calson's second and third.

I have Rojo as being assigned to the Scout base at Mu Cassiopeiae during this time, but due to budget issues, he was sent "on loan" to some other Scout team, or a Private Mining Corp (or something) to help with some joint-geological-survey effort thingy...

Rojo ended up getting a pretty posh (considering the alternative) assignment of "chauffeur", shuttling teams to and from work sites and landing platforms. He took a lot of ribbing for the role, but at the end of every ride... it was the passengers that wished they were sitting in the driver's seat, and not scrambling out onto the hostile surface of various asteroids, moons, and planets.

If we all are in agreement, this "shared history" can be recalled in bits and pieces as we go along.
